Testing Bags & purses

The bottom drawer of the test file is empty and a perfect place to ask your testing students to place their bags, purses, wallets, cell phones, or diamond jewelry while testing.

Just a thought.

MGF 1107

Today I had a student wanting to print out the text for this math class. She could open chapter 5, but not 1-4.

We had discussed it at our meeting, but I double-checked with Sue that this was indeed the course. Sue said that the books were available in the bookstore. I came back and told this to the student and she said that the bookstore directed her here to print it out. Her syllabus also said it was available online and could be printed out.

Betsy called the bookstore and was told that book has not been used "for years".

Sue is going to contact the math department.

Nursing 2293 Exam

Several student are now taking the NUR 2293 Fianl Exam ( Peri-Operative Nursing) It is an online exam and we discovered a problem with it. Whe you type in the password and hit enter, the screen just comes back to a blank screen to type the password in again. It will keep doing this over and over. Computer services says if this happens to completely log out and log back on and then it should work correctly.

This blog as a feed

Wendy was showing me RSS feeds the other day. This gccblog is also a feed and easy to set up. Using it this way makes it much easier to view. At the bottom of the blog you'll see a "Subscribe to: Posts (Atom)". Click here and subscribe. Add the RSS blog icon thing to your browser. Now, whenever you want, click on favorites in your browser and you'll bee the GCC blog icon top center to click on and see recent changes.

Additional Student Computer Resource

I found this in an old notebook and John said it was still valid. I printed a new copy and had Mike put it in the reference notebook. I am posting here as well.

Student Materials Available on the NT5 (R:) Drive

What is available: Class materials provided by the instructors
How do students find out what’s available? Instructors who want their students to use the “R” drive will inform their students in class of its availability.

How to access: From the computer desktop click on the “My computer” icon.
A window opens showing a number of different disk drives available. Click on “winapps on ‘nt5’(R:) ” icon. Another window will open showing a list of folders named according to class that is being supported. Click on the folder which supports the student’s class.

Security: Appropriate security rights have been assigned by Computer Services as instructed by the instructors.

Angelic Printing

When a student is printing from within ANGEL any kind of document, Word, PowerPoint, PDF, etc., they may not be getting expected results.

The work around is to go back to the link that opens the file they need. Right click that link and save it to the desktop. When it is finished saving it open the document by clicking on Open (if the save as box is still available), or go to the desktop and open it from there. It will open in its own document window outside of ANGEL.

Proceed with regular printing.

In ANGEL (should the student read it before clicking) it says:

Night Administrator

I had an issue tonight with a student who went to class, but no one else did and he thought it might have been moved. He said that we were the only place open and he wasn't sure what to do. (Me either)

So I called the operator...she is here until 9:30, btw. She called the night admin, Stephanie Driscall who came over and logged into CSRS on my PC and found out that this kid's class had been cancelled and his money had been refunded. The bad news...he didn't get the call or the refund. Stephanie gave him contacts and told him to call in the morning.

I asked if she worked every night...no, but there is someone here.

Monday: Herman Martin
Tuesday: Mike Childers
Wednesday: Chris Thomes
Thursday: Stephanie Driscall

What we do if we need help is call the operator, "0" and ask for the night administrator. The operator will call the NA on a radio because they might not be in their office. The will either call us or come over.

Outlook mail at the reference desk

Sue figured this out:
Configure your own Outlook email at the ref desk so you don't have to use gc web mail
1. from outlook add account
2. use the log on as gcmail\username and your password.
3. after the error message then use gc\username and your password

It takes about 15 minutes to bring your information in, but it works great.

Nursing Thompson download

Nursing students have come in and also through chat asked about a Thompson download for their PDA. Nursing instructor Ms. Fowler has told them they need to come here to do it.
Here's how:
They need to do this operation from the computer that their PDA syncs to when thet sync their PDA to their computer. Most times it is their own computer at home.
1. go to the library homapage
2. go to eResources
3. click on the right under Health Sciences
4. Choose the database "Thompson's PDR Electronic Library"
5. From the grey tabs at the top of the page choose "handheld"
6. Follow the directions. They give a number and a website to download this:

Your download gives you Exclusive Access to:
disease information
laboratory test information(A $99.99 value - yours FREE now!)
Plus, free access to information spanning:
drugs
interactions
alternative medicine
toxicology
news & alerts
and convenient calculators

Angel Issue

Yesterday I was working on the quiz show from Matt. When I tried to load it, I got the crossword puzzle again. I tried several times and finally had to go and get Matt. He looked at it and had me go to tools, internet options, delete browsing history, delete temporary files. Then when I tried again, I was able to get it. We probably won't need this, but some student may encounter this with ANGEL as the semester progresses. Something to keep in mind.

Student email issues

Matt has asked me to create a blog to share stuff that we encounter that students also may encounter. Feel free to add, edit or change stuff here. It is our space ( I think).

We had about 2 dozen students that came in with issues regarding birthdates that could not get into OASIS or stuent mail or angel or all 3.
1. First question is to ask when they registered. If they register today, then it takes some time for everthing to catch up to them. They are currently loading each night.
2. Second, they may need to go to admissions to see if their birthday is entered correctly. The need to take a photo id. Once that is fixed they can then get into OASIS. However, they won't be able to get into ANGEL or email until the next day when the load has been done. The other option is to have the student find out what the incorrect birthday is and use it, since both log ons require a password change. I personally vote to have them wait 24 hours.
