CGS 157o is the computer application class. They are teaching 2007 Microsoft products such as Access, Excel, etc. Since they went to 2007 the Success Center no longer is the place for help. Fortunately, the Business Division realized this and has set up CGS 1570 tutoring five days a week! Check the schedule because they do it at different times. Here is the link:

.odt documents
Open Source (the free downloadable office product) documents , if saved in the original format, come with the extension .odt.
These documents can be opened on Wordpad. Yeah. I can tell you're excited. Word (any version) will not open them. Best thing to tell the student as you are showing them this is that they make sure the next time they save their document as an rtf file.

Back way into databases
Saturday I had an issue with a student not being able to get into the articles through EZ Proxy. He IM'd at 4:52 with the problem. I told him the zz password, he tried that with no luck. So I tried and also had no luck.
So I told him to go to www.linccweb.org, click "search a specific DB" and use his GCCC # and PIN. No GCCC number. So I added him to ALEPH by SSN and used the last 4 of his SSN as the PIN. He then got in.
I will ask Connie to double check his enrollment status this morning.

EDUSPACE UPDATE

OK...if you have a student who cannot log in to EDUSPACE, have them RIGHT CLICK on the login button at the top of the page (right under the tabs) and select OPEN IN NEW WINDOW. This gets the program out of Angel and the students that I've worked with have been able to login.
NOTE: you can click on this picture and see a larger version.
If that does not work, our tech guys told me to tell the student that because this is not a GCCC provided resource (even though they access it through Angel) they need to contact EDUSPACE tech support.
From their site: To contact technical support for Eduspace:visit our online support center or call 1-800-732-3223 x1 .
Printing a powerpoint issue
Don Rese (for one) has posted his powerpoints in ANGEL not in the regular way, which allows us to open up the powerpoint file outside of ANGEL.
He saves it as a Web document in PPT bofore posting it in ANGEL.
I thought at first that when this is done that there was no alternative and the syudent was stuck printing out the entire pages. Well, that's not right. Treat the PowerPoint web link as a file, saving it the same way as you would by right clicking the html link in ANGEL then saving it to the desktop as an html document.
The way to open it in PPT so you can print 3 pages with lines is to then open PPT by itself, then click on open then paste the WEB address into powerpoint.
It works.

Glad to be at GCCC Library!
We have had a tradition at our library of locating all books whose purchase price is over $30.00 in our reference collection which does not circulate to students.

EDUSPACE
What's the story on Eduspace? I have a student who is struggling to log in and can't. I remember seeing a bunch of us trying to help someone else with this during the week.
I wasn't involved and don't know the outcome. Thanks.

Orientation Article scanning idea
This is from the CJCLS list. I thought it was an interesting idea:
During my library orientations for, let’s say an English 1A class, one of my topics is, “You are flooded with information. So, you have to learn scanning for scholarly articles because there is only so much time you have for writing a paper.”
Let’s take the Expanded Academic Index as an example. Having a list of 3,000 articles, then (1) check the length of an article: skip less than 1,000 words; 5,000+ words is an indication of being scholarly. (2) Frequency of publication: select preferably a quarterly publication = indication of being scholarly. (3) I prefer anything in the title of the journal with, “quarterly, review, journal, scholarly, studies,” etc. (4) Then check the title of the article whether it falls within your interest; if so, then open it. (5) I prefer a summary or abstract. (6) I prefer a paragraph on methodology of the study. (7) Is there supporting material, like graphs and statistics? (8) I expect a lengthy bibliography. --- The more mental checkmarks, the better the quality.
All the above shouldn’t take more than 15 - 20 seconds per article before deciding whether to skip it or to start reading the abstract. A+ students may also want to copy the first author and check in Google his/her background = is the author an authority?
I am explaining the above points (and the exceptions) while actually going through some examples. And for sure, what I am doing is certainly not unique. I suppose it is only one example of teaching “Critical thinking.”

Printing eBooks
Printing pages from eBooks can be a pain.
If the book does not load in Adobe (some do, others don't) then it is very difficult to find out how to print a page.
There is a way, and you can print as many pages you like! You need to print them one page at a time, but use the old DOS method of using keyboard commands. NetLibrary doesn't let you right click anything, but if you select the page by left clicking anywhere on a bland part of the page then hit Ctrl and P at the same time you will get the print dialog box to print that page!

MGF 1107
Today I had a student wanting to print out the text for this math class. She could open chapter 5, but not 1-4.
We had discussed it at our meeting, but I double-checked with Sue that this was indeed the course. Sue said that the books were available in the bookstore. I came back and told this to the student and she said that the bookstore directed her here to print it out. Her syllabus also said it was available online and could be printed out.
Betsy called the bookstore and was told that book has not been used "for years".
Sue is going to contact the math department.

Nursing 2293 Exam
Several student are now taking the NUR 2293 Fianl Exam ( Peri-Operative Nursing) It is an online exam and we discovered a problem with it. Whe you type in the password and hit enter, the screen just comes back to a blank screen to type the password in again. It will keep doing this over and over. Computer services says if this happens to completely log out and log back on and then it should work correctly.
This blog as a feed
Wendy was showing me RSS feeds the other day. This gccblog is also a feed and easy to set up. Using it this way makes it much easier to view. At the bottom of the blog you'll see a "Subscribe to: Posts (Atom)". Click here and subscribe. Add the RSS blog icon thing to your browser. Now, whenever you want, click on favorites in your browser and you'll bee the GCC blog icon top center to click on and see recent changes.
Additional Student Computer Resource
I found this in an old notebook and John said it was still valid. I printed a new copy and had Mike put it in the reference notebook. I am posting here as well.
Student Materials Available on the NT5 (R:) Drive
What is available: Class materials provided by the instructors
How do students find out what’s available? Instructors who want their students to use the “R” drive will inform their students in class of its availability.
How to access: From the computer desktop click on the “My computer” icon.
A window opens showing a number of different disk drives available. Click on “winapps on ‘nt5’(R:) ” icon. Another window will open showing a list of folders named according to class that is being supported. Click on the folder which supports the student’s class.
Security: Appropriate security rights have been assigned by Computer Services as instructed by the instructors.

Angelic Printing
When a student is printing from within ANGEL any kind of document, Word, PowerPoint, PDF, etc., they may not be getting expected results.
The work around is to go back to the link that opens the file they need. Right click that link and save it to the desktop. When it is finished saving it open the document by clicking on Open (if the save as box is still available), or go to the desktop and open it from there. It will open in its own document window outside of ANGEL.
Proceed with regular printing.
In ANGEL (should the student read it before clicking) it says:

Night Administrator
I had an issue tonight with a student who went to class, but no one else did and he thought it might have been moved. He said that we were the only place open and he wasn't sure what to do. (Me either)
So I called the operator...she is here until 9:30, btw. She called the night admin, Stephanie Driscall who came over and logged into CSRS on my PC and found out that this kid's class had been cancelled and his money had been refunded. The bad news...he didn't get the call or the refund. Stephanie gave him contacts and told him to call in the morning.
I asked if she worked every night...no, but there is someone here.
Monday: Herman Martin
Tuesday: Mike Childers
Wednesday: Chris Thomes
Thursday: Stephanie Driscall
What we do if we need help is call the operator, "0" and ask for the night administrator. The operator will call the NA on a radio because they might not be in their office. The will either call us or come over.

Outlook mail at the reference desk
Sue figured this out:
Configure your own Outlook email at the ref desk so you don't have to use gc web mail
1. from outlook add account
2. use the log on as gcmail\username and your password.
3. after the error message then use gc\username and your password
It takes about 15 minutes to bring your information in, but it works great.

Nursing Thompson download
Nursing students have come in and also through chat asked about a Thompson download for their PDA. Nursing instructor Ms. Fowler has told them they need to come here to do it.
Here's how:
They need to do this operation from the computer that their PDA syncs to when thet sync their PDA to their computer. Most times it is their own computer at home.
1. go to the library homapage
2. go to eResources
3. click on the right under Health Sciences
4. Choose the database "Thompson's PDR Electronic Library"
5. From the grey tabs at the top of the page choose "handheld"
6. Follow the directions. They give a number and a website to download this:
Your download gives you Exclusive Access to:
disease information
laboratory test information(A $99.99 value - yours FREE now!)
Plus, free access to information spanning:
drugs
interactions
alternative medicine
toxicology
news & alerts
and convenient calculators

Angel Issue
Yesterday I was working on the quiz show from Matt. When I tried to load it, I got the crossword puzzle again. I tried several times and finally had to go and get Matt. He looked at it and had me go to tools, internet options, delete browsing history, delete temporary files. Then when I tried again, I was able to get it. We probably won't need this, but some student may encounter this with ANGEL as the semester progresses. Something to keep in mind.

Student email issues
Matt has asked me to create a blog to share stuff that we encounter that students also may encounter. Feel free to add, edit or change stuff here. It is our space ( I think).
We had about 2 dozen students that came in with issues regarding birthdates that could not get into OASIS or stuent mail or angel or all 3.
1. First question is to ask when they registered. If they register today, then it takes some time for everthing to catch up to them. They are currently loading each night.
2. Second, they may need to go to admissions to see if their birthday is entered correctly. The need to take a photo id. Once that is fixed they can then get into OASIS. However, they won't be able to get into ANGEL or email until the next day when the load has been done. The other option is to have the student find out what the incorrect birthday is and use it, since both log ons require a password change. I personally vote to have them wait 24 hours.
